What You Need In A Writing Desk
A writing desk is usually quite a bit smaller than a regular computer or other type of desk, making it ideal to tuck away in a small corner of a room. Unless you are planning on using your small writing desk for display purposes, which many people do, you will want to ensure that it will do the job it is meant for.
Usually most people like to have drawer space in their writing desk. This is preferable to buying a desk without any drawers at all, as desk tops can very soon become cluttered with pens, notepads and other paraphernalia, especially if the writing surface is small. Drawers allow you to store stationary needs as well as other small items so that they are out of sight, yet still within easy reach. Writing desk drawers are often quite shallow, so you may need to use drawer organizers to keep things neat and tidy, and in place.
You should plan your workspace so that you have everything nearby, and so that you know exactly where everything is. If you will be using the top of your desk to place your laptop on, make sure that you are able to keep cables out of the way. Invest in a wireless internet connection so that you do not have excess cords coming to your computer.
You should also make sure that you have sufficient lighting while working at your desk. As desk lamps can sometimes take up precious space, you could consider alternatives. Clip on lamps work quite well, especially if you buy a gooseneck lamp that allows you to direct the light precisely where you need it to be. Consider mounting a light on the wall directly above your desk to save space.
If you are not able to buy a writing desk that allows you to adjust the desk height you may want to invest instead in an office chair. These do not have to be wieldy but the ability to lower or heighten the chair could prove useful.
Above all, your writing desk should provide you with a quite calm working atmosphere that is conducive to work. Keep it clean and uncluttered, use your minimal draw space well and have it positioned in a place that allows you freedom of access and movement.
