If you want to give your kitchen a face lift and change things around so that you have a more modern look, then there are a few do it yourself projects you can try so that you so not have to install an entirely new kitchen. Some of these projects will take a few hours and others will take several days. Give these a try in order to get modern kitchens for less money.

First, modern spaces usually have a one or two toned color scheme. That means that you only see two colors in all the décor. More traditional kitchens have several different colors in their pallet because sometimes the cabinets are stained, the backsplash has accent tiles, the walls are painted, and the counter tops are another color. It will be very expensive to replace everything, so try to change the less expensive items to match the big ticket ones. For example, if you have a green countertop, then you can paint your walls and cabinets a complementary color or a similar color.

Modern spaces have very clean lines so that means no ornate trim on the top of the cabinets or decorative cabinet handles. The simpler the better when it comes to modern design. You can replace the brass cabinet door handles with decorative carvings with straight plastic handles or small knobs with no decoration. Remove any decorative plates or the like from on top of your cabinets. These objects will detract from the clean line on the top of your cabinets.

In addition, modern spaces are open. If it is at all possible you should try to open up your kitchen so that you can see out into other rooms. If there are currently French doors keeping the dining room separate from the kitchen, then open them or remove them. Another trick you can use to make a space feel more open is to remove the cabinet doors. Instead of going through an entire kitchen cabinet door replacement project, just remove the doors and leave your cabinet open.
