For many years the antique farmhouse kitchen table was an extremely popular look for many kitchens with a country design or décor. Though they have somewhat fallen out of fashion for more modern designed kitchens, the large farm table is making a resurgence in popularity. The typical arrangement of a farmhouse table would be in the middle of a large kitchen with plenty of seats or benches for the entire family to gather for meals or in between meals to spend time together. The table, chairs and benches were normally fashioned from tough, rustic hardwood that was locally available. This meant farmhouses in different parts of the country would have different wooden tables based on the local trees. The most prevalent shape was obviously a rectangle to fit the large family, but there were also square, round and oblong tables built. Though the main feature of the table was its utilitarian design, many craftsmen starting carving the legs or edges of the tabletop to make each table unique and special.
