Proper Placement and Positioning of Driveway Lights

If your home could use some extra exterior illumination, it may be a good idea to invest in a set of driveway lights. In the past, most driveway light sets have been operated by electricity; however, as the cost of utilities continue to rise, more and more people have pressed manufacturers for a more energy-efficient solution. The result: solar-powered driveway lights.

Sold in sets of multiple lights, ranging from 3 to 8 lantern stakes per set, solar powered lighting is easy to use. In fact, one of the most difficult jobs a person may face is proper placement and positioning. Fortunately, since light stakes are easy to remove, if a mistake is made, it can quickly be corrected.

Before installing any lights, it is important to evaluate your existing lighted areas. This task can be performed at dusk, as it is just getting dark. To simulate proper nighttime driveway conditions, be sure to turn on all outdoor porch and flood lights you would usually operate at night. Since driveway lights will be used to light a specific path, see if any porch or exterior home lighting reaches the driveway. If so, you will not need to place a solar light in this location, unless you require a brighter path. Should you not require lighting in this area, mark the ending location where the light reaches, as this will be the first location of your solar-powered driveway light.

Next, if your home has illumination from a street light, repeat the process; marking the location where your last light will be placed. By concentrating your lighting’s placement in the darkest areas, you will ensure your entire driveway remains illuminated. Furthermore, this will help homeowners determine the correct number of outdoor lights needed; so they do not over or under purchase light sets. When buying lights, do consider purchasing an extra set, as you never know when you may decide to create a new illuminated path. This way, all lights will have a uniform look and shoppers will not have to search endlessly for a matching set.
