Cavity Wall Insulation – Conserve Energy And Your Money

If you live in an old house that has no cavity wall insulation, it is time to start thinking about getting some.
Why is that? Well, in case you haven’t noticed, energy prices are rising and the whole world is talking about global warming. Most of the worlds governments seem to agree that the only way to stop global warming, is to reduce co2 emissions – which means reducing consumption of oil and coal for energy production. Do you see where this is going? Right – you too will have to reduce your energy consumption! Since heating is responsible for such a large part of the energy usage in most homes, it makes a lot of sense to start with that.  In most cases, the easiest and cheapest way to reduce heating in your home is to add insulation to the outer shell of your home. This includes walls, ceiling and also under the floor.

In many wooden and brick-houses it is easy to install. There will be cavities in the walls that can be filled with insulation material, and in the case of ceiling, it is really just a matter of fastening the material underneath the roof. Often it is possible to get  access to the underside of the floor from a cellar. In that case, the insulating material is easy to attach under the floor boards. Wall cavities sometimes require a bit more work. If you have walls constructed from vertical wooden pillars with wooden cladding on both sides, you can either remove the inner or outer cladding, and just stick in the insulation material, which will probably be mineral wool batts for this method. If you can’t or won’t remove the wooden cladding, or you live in a brickhouse, you may use the method of air-blowing granulated material into the cavity. This can work very well and is quickly done. Most people will want to hire a professional for this sort of work though, as it requires special equipment. If you count yourself among the more adventurous, you can rent the machinery and do it yourself. With either method you should always talk to a trained professional before attempting to do it yourself. There are some pitfalls to cavity wall insulation which can result in causing more harm than good if you do it wrong. For many, hiring  registered cavity wall insulation installers will be the right solution, and even if it may cost more that way, it is still a tremendously good investment in the value of your home, as a well-insulated home will become sought after in the near-future.

Cavity wall insulation cost is in no way prohibitive, if that is what you think – especially not compared to the benefits. Conserving energy is on everybodys mind these days, and when you can save money by saving energy, there really is no reason not to.
