Black Mold Testing for Safety Purposes
Black mold is a common problem in areas that remain damp and do not have proper ventilation. It grows on wet floors and walls and eventually turns black. If it is not removed it may cause serious health problems. However, not all kinds of mold are harmful to health. Whatever is the kind of mold, it has to be removed before it becomes dangerous. Most often areas like sinks, bathrooms and basements are prone to black mold growth.
Some of the black molds are dangerous and can even cause death. Some types are even known to be allergic and can cause cough, congestion and headaches. Since there are different strains of the mold you can conduct tests to identify them and take the necessary steps to remove them.
There are many testing kits available in the market which can be used to test the presence of mold. The kits are designed for testing the air quality in the home or whichever area is being tested. The test is for identifying airborne mold spores. The kits contain a petri dish and a disc. This has to be exposed to air for over two hours. After two hours the lid has to be closed and left for 2 days to incubate. If there is mold growth it can be seen on the dish. But it cannot be identified if the mold is the poisonous one or not.
While testing for black mold it is necessary to read all the instructions properly for getting accurate results. If the test gives a positive result, then measures have to be taken for getting rid of it. Also check for the causes of the presence of the mold. Dark places that have leaky roofs, pipes and sinks can cause the growth. There are several simple methods to remove the growth. The first step for removing black mold is to identify the leaks and fix them. Keep the places completely dry. Provide proper ventilation also.
To clean mold, use a mild soap detergent on the surface and scrub it clean. Then rinse it with clean water. For additional protection disinfectants can also be used. Leave the area to dry properly and have good ventilation also. When the cleaning is done, dispose all the materials used to clean to prevent it from spreading. Ensure that such places are always maintained, clean and dry. When this is done, it will be a mold free area.
